How To Fix Your Credit In Glendale, Arizona: A Step-By-Step Guide

Imperial Ethics Credit Repair · Glendale, Arizona · 7 min read
Fixing your credit is a correspondence job, not a magic trick. There is a right order to work in, and most of it you can do yourself for free. Here is the sequence we use with clients across the Valley.

Step 1: Pull all three credit reports, not one

Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are separate companies with separate records. An account can be wrong on one and correct on the other two, and a lender may pull whichever one you have not looked at. You are entitled to free reports from all three, and checking your own report is a soft inquiry. It does not lower your score, no matter how often you look.
We ask clients to use smartcredit.com/imperialethics because it shows all three side by side and updates as things change. If you already pay for credit monitoring, use that instead. There is no reason to pay twice.

Step 2: Read every line and mark what is wrong

Go account by account. You are looking for four things: entries you do not recognize, the same debt listed more than once, balances or statuses that are wrong, and dates that do not match your memory of when the account went bad. That last one matters more than people realize. The date the account first went unpaid is what starts the seven-year clock, and if it has been moved forward, the account is staying on your report longer than the law allows.
Also check your personal information. Mixed files happen constantly, especially with common names or a junior and senior in the same household. Someone else’s collection account on your report is one of the easier things to get removed.

Step 3: Dispute what is inaccurate or unverified

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you can dispute anything on your report that is inaccurate, incomplete or unverified. Write to each bureau reporting the error, identify the account, say specifically what is wrong, and attach whatever proof you have. Send it in a way you can prove you sent it.
The bureau then has 30 days to investigate. It either corrects the entry, deletes it, or comes back saying it was verified. If you get a bare “verified” with no explanation, that is not the end of the road. You can ask how they verified it, and you can go directly to the creditor or collection agency and ask them to produce their records.

Step 4: Fix what is accurate

Disputing only addresses what is wrong. If an account is accurate, current and verifiable, it stays until it ages off. No dispute changes that. What moves the needle on accurate files is different work:
1.
Get utilization under control. Revolving balances are the fastest-moving part of a score. Paying a card from 90% used down to under 30% can show up in a single billing cycle.
2.
Never miss another payment. Payment history is the heaviest single factor. One 30-day late can undo months of progress.
3.
Leave old accounts open. Closing your oldest card shortens your credit history and can raise your utilization at the same time.
4.
Stop applying for everything. Each hard inquiry costs a little, and a burst of them reads as distress to a lender.

Step 5: Know when to hire someone

If you have one obvious error, do it yourself. It is free and the bureaus have to answer you exactly as they would answer us. People hire a credit repair company when the file is genuinely complicated: several collections, a mixed identity, a bankruptcy, or a first round that came back verified with no explanation, or when they have a mortgage application coming and cannot afford to spend six months learning the process.
If you go that route, two rules. A credit repair organization cannot legally charge you before work is performed, and no one can guarantee a specific score increase. Anyone who does either is telling you something the law does not allow them to.
